Samenwerking METC / Collaboration MREC

Het UMC Utrecht en het Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie gaan samenwerken op het gebied van toetsing van medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Beide organisaties gaan hun krachten bundelen in één gezamenlijke Medisch Ethische Toetsingscommissie (METC), die per 1 januari 2019 verder zal gaan onder de naam METC Utrecht.

Expertise

Door de krachten te bundelen verwachten beide centra voordelen te bereiken waardoor zij hun positie op het gebied van toetsing van onderzoek kunnen verstevigen. Als gevolg van deze samenwerking zal de expertise (met name op gebied van geneesmiddelenonderzoek) van de METC groeien evenals het volume (aantal protocollen). De METC kan zich specialiseren op het gebied van de beoordeling van kinderoncologisch onderzoek. Verwacht wordt dat de gezamenlijke METC ook beter in staat zal zijn om te anticiperen op toekomstige (Europese) ontwikkelingen wat betreft wet- en regelgeving.

Toetsen

Voor de indiening van protocollen heeft deze samenwerking geen gevolgen. De commissie zal worden uitgebreid met enkele leden van het Prinses Máxima Centrum. Per 1 januari 2019 zal het Prinses Máxima Centrum al haar medisch wetenschappelijk onderzoek laten toetsen door de gezamenlijke METC.  Ook de studies die lopen via SKION (Stichting Kinderoncologie Nederland) kunnen dan door de METC Utrecht getoetst gaan worden. De Centrale Commissie Mensgebonden Onderzoek (CCMO) staat positief tegenover deze samenwerking.

Collaboration in one Medical Research Ethics Committee (MREC)

UMC Utrecht and the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology are going to collaborate in the field of reviewing medical scientific research. Both organizations will join forces in one joint Medical Research Ethics Committee (MREC, Dutch: METC), which will continue under the name METC Utrecht from January 1, 2019.

Expertise

By joining forces, both centers expect to benefit in a way that will enable them to strengthen their position in the field of reviewing research. As a result of this collaboration, the MREC's expertise (particularly in the field of drug research) will grow as well as the volume (number of protocols). The MREC can specialize in the review of pediatric oncology research. It is expected that the joint MREC will also be better able to anticipate future (European) developments regarding legislation and regulations.

Review

This collaboration has no consequences for the submission of protocols. Several members of the Princess Máxima Center will join the committee. As of January 1, 2019, the Princess Máxima Center will have all its medical research reviewed by the joint METC. The studies that run via the Pediatric Oncology Foundation (SKION) will also be reviewed by the METC Utrecht.  The Central Committee for Human Research (CCMO) is in favor of this collaboration.
